The Beacon Museum

The Beacon looks a bit like a lighthouse and it shines a light on Whitehaven and the surrounding area’s rich past. Located at the south side of the harbour and set over four floors, the museum’s displays, artefacts and interactive exhibits touch on many aspects of local history.

Those displays go from early geology and the Romans through to industry, trade and the town’s connections with the Americas. And then to the Sellafield Story and the history of the nuclear industry in the area. Or as the museum puts it ‘from pirates to power stations, Romans to robots’.

The Sellafield Story on Floor 2 was a brand new display for The Beacon when it re-opened in May 2014. Floor 4 offers a great view of Whitehaven’s harbour and town while Floor 1 has changing exhibitions of art and history in its Harbour Gallery.
