Cafés and tearooms

Sit on the terrace here at Brantwood on a warm day and you’ll probably never want to leave. Few other coffee houses/restaurants in the Lake District have a view quite like this, with Coniston Water below and Coniston Old Man and ‘his’ family of fells beyond that.

Almost 80 years after William Heaton Cooper opened his studio/gallery in Grasmere, the same family opened a café right next door. Taking its name from the Norwegian woman - Mathilde Valentsin - who married William’s artist father, Alfred, in 1894, there’s more than a nod to Scandinavia in both the design and feel of the space, and the food itself.

Here are a few other places around Grasmere, Hawkshead and Coniston to consider.
