Pubs, inns and bars

In a part of England where pubs with great views are second nature, the Hikers’ Bar is up there with the best, located as it is near the head of the Great Langdale Valley, with Bowfell and Crinkle Crags to the west and the Langdale Pikes to the north. A ‘glorious setting’, as the Good Pub Guide 2018 said. The bar is also in the guide’s 2020 edition.

‘Nothing fits and nothing’s normal - from the wonky floors to the even wonkier walls,’ say the family owners of this 17th century, 12 bedroom inn. And that’s part of the attraction, along with the log fires in the bar, the old wood panelling on the walls, the handpumps dispensing a changing selection of four ales and the choice of 40 or so whiskies.

Here are a few other places around Grasmere, Hawkshead and Coniston to consider.
