Sedbergh. The Black Bull

Named North West Pub and Bar of the Year at the National Pub and Bar Awards 2022, this ‘acclaimed Yorkshire Dales gastropub’ - in the words of The Times - has certainly made a big name for itself since Nina Matsunaga and James Ratcliffe reopened here in 2018.

It was one of Estrella Damm’s Top 50 Gastropubs in 2020, was shortlisted in the Best Pub category in the annual GQ Food and Drink Awards 2021 and has been much praised in the national press.

Nina herself, the head chef, won the Pub Restaurant Chef award at the Craft Guild of Chefs Awards 2022, was one of CODE Hospitality’s ‘100 most influential women in hospitality 2022’ described as an ‘exhilarating talent’ in the Sunday Times Magazine in 2020 and winner of The Innovator award in Olive magazine’s Chef Awards 2019.

Step through the front door and the bar counter lies straight ahead with a cosy bar (including wood burner) to the left and two restaurant areas to the right. Outside, at the back of the pub, are the ‘Stables and Meadow’ where the Black Bull offers a ‘more rustic and relaxed experience’, with sourdough pizzas and barbecue food.

In the kitchen it is the influence of Nina’s upbringing (born in Germany to Japanese parents) and the Lune Valley background of James that play heavily in its direction of travel, local produce ‘transformed by innovative Japanese-inspired cooking,’ as the Good Hotel Guide 2022 puts it. The restaurant has two AA rosettes.
