near Bowness-on-Windermere. Henrock, Linthwaite House

Named Hotel Restaurant of the Year at the Cumbria Food Awards 2022, Henrock was Simon Rogan’s first foray into the Lake District, the chef already well known for his restaurants down the road in Cartmel - L’Enclume (three Michelin stars), Rogan & Co (one star) and Aulis Cartmel.

Henrock opened in late 2019 and is set in the luxurious surroundings of Linthwaite House, the hotel itself sitting in 14 acres (5.7ha) of gardens and woodland, with sublime views across Windermere. Its name derives from a rocky outcrop on the lake called the Hen Rock.

‘Lunch at the gorgeous Henrock is the one that truly moved me,’ said restaurant critic Grace Dent in The Guardian’s Feast magazine in 2021, reminding her, she said a few months later, ‘why Britain is so good at fine dining’.

It’s an informally elegant restaurant, with a Michelin Plate and three AA Rosettes, the dishes ‘rooted in British cooking and ingredients’, including much produce from Our Farm, Simon Rogan’s own farm at Cartmel.

Menus, says the restaurant, are ‘influenced by techniques and produce discovered on our team’s travels around the world’. So for main courses, expect the likes of white Peking duck, gochujang and date croquette, celeriac and bitter chocolate; aged middle white pork belly, spiced lentil, plum, wet garlic and sumac; or grilled fillet of pollock, curried cauliflower, roasted shrimp and lemongrass.

Meanwhile, an all-day menu is offered in the hotel's bar and lounge and on the terrace, with small and larger plates which - between them - may include pressed pork knuckle, cured salmon, braised ox cheek, west coast fish pie and farm vegetable hot pot.

A Simon Rogan take on the traditional afternoon tea is also served, a time to enjoy the savouries, scones, cakes and desserts sparkling while relishing those wonderful views across the lake to the fells beyond.
