Three Michelin stars, five AA Rosettes, the Good Food Guide’s number one restaurant in the UK multiple times, and celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, L’Enclume has most certainly fulfilled Simon Rogan’s promise of ‘modern, innovative cooking’ when it opened in 2002.

His famed flagship restaurant is now one of eight in the UK to hold three stars and the only one with such an accolade in the north of England. L’Enclume also has a Michelin green star, an award that highlights a restaurant’s excellent sustainable practices.

At the National Restaurant Awards 2022, Simon was named Chef of the Year while L’Enclume was placed at number 10 in the ‘Top 100 restaurants in the UK’.

Earlier in 2022, at the Cumbria Food Awards, he received the Outstanding Contribution Award, while another of his restaurants - Henrock at Linthwaite House, overlooking Windermere - was named Hotel Restaurant of the Year.

L’Enclume may be located in a 14th century smithy but only the whitewashed stone walls, the old beams and an anvil in the fireplace smack of antiquity. The food here speaks of surprise, invention, excitement, terrific skill, intense flavour and ‘scintillating cooking’. Great service and presentation complete the picture.

A multi course tasting menu (overseen by head chef Paul Burgalières) is available for both lunch and dinner, a shorter course tasting menu is offered at lunch. The menus are in a ‘constant state of evolution’, with much seasonal produce supplied by L’Enclume’s own farm called Our Farm.

Dishes may include the likes of fritter of Duroc pig and smoked eel, lovage and fermented sweetcorn; Berkswell pudding caramelised in birch sap, stout vinegar and aged Berkswell; raw Cartmel Valley roe deer in coal oil, pumpkin seed, preserved cucumber and nasturtium; seaweed custard, beef broth and bone marrow, Porlock oysters and L’Enclume’s blend of caviar; west coast cod, steamed with dulse (seaweed), rainbow chard and Mylor prawns in rosehip; chamomile cake and cobnut cream, candied pumpkin, pumpkin juice with sea buckthorn.

After winning a third Michelin star in March 2022, Simon Rogan said: ‘This has always been one of my greatest ambitions, and my head is still buzzing with excitement and joy. Words cannot express the joy that I’m feeling.’ As 20th anniversary presents go, it couldn’t have been any better.
