Unforgettable name, unforgettable place. Rococo meets Gothic meets luxurious living at Andy and Chrissy Hill's bijou bed and breakfast, a former hunting lodge to nearby Wray Castle, both places built at the same time in the 1840s.

You'll feel a bit like royalty here, what with the huge rooms, the seriously large, hand carved beds with their Frette linen, the enormous bathrooms (‘virtually the size of any of the Benelux countries’), the lavish colours, the richly textured designer fabrics, the deep-filled comfort and the ‘out of the world’ breakfasts. All fit for a king or queen. ‘If you want to escape to paradise for a couple of days…then this is the place,’ said one very happy guest.

The Vallelay suite is named after Andy’s grandfather, Martindale comes from Chrissy’s family, Dawson is a nod to Dr James Dawson, the man who built Wray Castle and Randy Pike, and The Juniper House (see below) honours Dawson’s wife, Margaret Wheeler Preston whose father, Robert Wheeler Preston, owned a gin distillery in Liverpool.

Of course Randy Pike is all laced with a bit of eccentricity. But eccentricity is what people love about the place. And if you want to be brought back down to earth there’s great countryside right outside your front door. ‘Rest, wake, relax and repair’, say the couple, both Cumbrian, born and bred. What else can you do?
