Book into The Juniper House at Randy Pike (see above) and you’ll discover how a labour of love turned into a lap of luxury. ‘The most beautiful suite we’ve ever stayed in,’ said one guest of Andy and Chrissy Hill’s creation. ’A perfect mix of eclectic luxury,’ reported another.

The hexagonal-shaped suite stands on its own in the garden here with a wooden terrace wrapped around the building. Spacious, lavish, colourful and full of invention, it is a ‘very special place of peace and comfort,’ say the Hills.

There’s a super-king bed, cosy sofas, a ceiling light made from an upturned log basket, cymbals covering the two tom-tom lined porthole windows, a huge gate stone in the bathroom and reclaimed industrial shelving with little labels saying ‘kilts and sporrans’ ‘itchy tank tops’ and ‘string vests’.

The Juniper House is named in honour of gin heiress Margaret Wheeler Preston (Bank Hall Distillery in Liverpool) whose husband Dr James Dawson built nearby Wray Castle and its then hunting lodge, Randy Pike.

The Hills didn’t take quite so long to create The Juniper House but the actual building work and sourcing all the furnishings - doors, pictures, mirrors, copper bath, the Indigo bed, lamps, flight cases (for the lamps to stand on) and sofas - was a huge job.

But it was all worth it, as guests who stay at this delightful retreat and feast on the wonderful breakfasts and the views - Wansfell and Windermere in the distance - will no doubt tell you.
