near Coniston Water. Howe Foot. Self-catering

Turn off the A5092 about two miles (3.2km) from Greenodd and you’ll come to this magical little spot where great care and craftsmanship, and beautiful natural materials are the hallmarks of two immaculate cottages, tucked into a hollow beside Otley Beck.

The newer of the properties (Otley Beck Cottage) has a kitchen overlooking the beck, a gallery bedroom with views across the fields, a downstairs bedroom for when two friends are sharing, a shower room, underfloor heating, a lovely aqua-coloured Aga, chunky beams, wood burning stove in the sitting room and Tilberthwaite slate on floors and worktops.

A former oak swill basket maker’s workshop - now Garden Cottage - also sleeps two, and as with the other cottage, the slate floors, the ironwork on doors and windows, the Rayburn and the kitchen equipment and Tilberthwaite slate all speak of the very highest quality.

Howe Foot is ‘an irresistible Lakeland retreat,’ say owners, Sue and Martin Hawkard, who carried out all the conversion work, building work and decoration themselves. All this with a great location: Coniston Water lies a few miles to the north while the southern end of Windermere at Newby Bridge is about 25/30 minutes away.
