Ambleside. Ambleside Manor. B&B. In the same family ownership as Zeffirellis and Fellini’s in Ambleside (the restaurant and cinema complexes), this vegetarian B&B has 16 bedrooms, five of them on the ground floor. The 19th century building sits in two acres of garden and grounds, with plenty of parking and a short walk from the town centre.

The rooms are on first and second floors. Elder Grove was England’s Bed and Breakfast of the Year 2019 at the Travel and Hospitality Awards.

The Grade II listed property, with its slate-flagged floors and thick stone walls, overlooks Stock Ghyll and a waterwheel that once turned almost daily. Three bedrooms, two on the second floor. 

near Ambleside. Skelwith Fold Caravan Park. Camping/caravanning. North West Campsite of the Year in the AA Caravan and Camping Awards 2018, this 130 acre (52ha) site - to the north west of the lake - has over 300 privately owned static caravan holiday homes, space for tourers, motorhomes and camper vans, glamping pods and safari tents. The park has a David Bellamy Conservation Award. 

Bowness. Dome House. B&B/Self-catering. There have been many extraordinary buildings, born of dreams and mighty endeavour, that have featured on Channel 4’s Grand Designs over the years. One of them is Dome House where three suites are available for B&B and one suite is for self-catering (four people). The property is located on the slopes above Bowness, with great views of Windermere.

Bowness. Lindeth Fell. B&B. For almost 40 years this Edwardian country house has been in the hands of the Kennedy family. There are glorious views of Windermere (lake), the house sitting in seven acres (2.8ha) of gardens, laid out by the well known Windermere landscape designer Thomas Mawson in 1907. 14 bedrooms. Good Hotel Guide 2022. The AA five star gold B&B was AA Guest Accommodation of the Year (England) for 2019-20. 

near Bowness. Broad Leys. B&B. Built by the famous Arts and Crafts architect CFA Voysey in 1898, Broad Leys is the headquarters of the Windermere Motor Boat Racing Club. Fortunately the Grade I listed property also offers six bedrooms for B&B (three are en suite) and for lovers of Arts and Crafts architecture there can be few better treats than waking up in such a glorious spot. The Windermere and Voysey suites, in particular, have fabulous lake views.

Troutbeck. High Fold Guest House. B&B. ‘Like something out of a film set,’ wrote one guest after a visit to this three bedroom B&B. It’s got a wonderful location and smashing views, and is less than three miles (4.8km) from Windermere.

Windermere. Fir Trees Guest House. B&B. This former gentleman’s residence - built 1888 - is now a nine bedroom B&B, two of the rooms dog-friendly, some big enough for families. Original features like Minton floor tiles, pitch pine doors and staircase are much in evidence. Fir Trees is located between Bowness and Windermere. 

Windermere. Glen Wynne. B&B. Number 7 in the Top 25 B&Bs and Inns in the UK and Channel Islands in Tripadvisor’s Travellers’ Choice Best of the Best 2022. Four bedrooms and one apartment in this 1860s-built property. 

Windermere. Hill of Oaks Lodge and Caravan Park. Camping/caravanning. Right beside Windermere, this five star VisitEngland lodge and caravan park has almost one mile (1.6km) of access to the lakeshore. Touring caravans, and motor home and holiday home owners are welcome, and there are glamping pods, lodges and self-catering apartments as well.

Windermere. Jerichos. B&B. A short walk from Windermere station - slightly further up the hill from Bowness and the lake - brings you to this much praised former Victorian temperance hotel. Ten bedrooms are spread over the first and second floors, with big comfortable beds, high standards of decoration and stylish bathrooms. Inside the entrance, the floor tiles are a reminder of the property’s Victorian (1870s) heritage. 

Windermere. Rum Doodle. B&B. Named after a 1950s book about a fictional expedition to climb the world’s highest mountain - Rum Doodle in Yogistan - this nine bedroom B&B is a ‘quintessentially English, vintage-styled haven,’ says the owners. Located just off the main road between Bowness and Windermere. 

Windermere. Wheatlands Lodge. B&B. A flourish of colour in the impressive entrance hall sets the tone for this five star B&B. The 1860s-built property - with a number of original features - has eight guest bedrooms, the two biggest being on the second floor. Breakfasts provide a great start to the day. It’s not far from Windermere train station.

B&B. ’Our traditional Lakeland exterior hides a suave and sophisticated interior,’ say the owners of this eight suite B&B where ‘statement chandeliers, baroque-style beds, glass tables and velvet throws’ are much in evidence. Three suites have patios, two come with private entrances.
