More places to stay in Northern Lakes, Keswick and Western Lakes

Charm, elegance and good old fashioned hospitality go hand in hand with wonderful views of Crummock Water and the fells at this National Trust property, near to Buttermere village. There are three bedrooms in the house while a few steps away is Wood House Cottage, available for self-catering. 

Ennerdale. YHA Black Sail. B&B/Self-catering. If you think Bird How is remote (see below), then try Black Sail hut at the head of Ennerdale and accessible only by foot. But as it says ‘those on walking, hiking and climbing holidays will value the superb access to nearby peaks including Great Gable, Pillar, Red Pike and Steeple’. Breakfast, packed lunches and home-cooked evening meals are available.

near Gosforth. 1692 Wasdale. B&B. ‘Sleekly designed and with many modern comforts,’ says the Good Hotel Guide 2022 of this much praised, six bedroom B&B. All is lovely inside but the outside is just as good, with Wasdale and Wastwater not far away. The lounge has an an open fire and an honesty bar. 

near Holmrook. Bird How. Self-catering. Whenever national newspapers do a travel feature on ‘remote’ places to stay in the UK, there’s a strong chance that Bird How will be mentioned. ‘With no phone or TV signal, you’ll be able to really appreciate the simplicity of this former cow barn,’ says the National Trust which owns the two bedroom cottage.

Lorton, near Cockermouth. New House Farm. B&B. A ‘luxury wedding venue and country guest house’ rolled into one, the farm is located in the beautiful Vale of Lorton. There are five guest bedrooms in the property which dates back to the 17th century. Good Hotel Guide 2022. 

Newlands Valley. Littletown Farm Guest House. B&B. A great location, close to Catbells, wonderful walks from the door, excellent breakfasts, welcoming hosts, a working farm and links to Beatrix Potter. Is there much more you’d want from a B&B in the Lake District? There are seven bedrooms and the dining room becomes a tearoom in summer.

Portinscale, near Keswick. Derwentwater House. Self-catering. Overlooking Derwentwater and close to Keswick, this magnificent Georgian property sleeps up to 22 guests, with 16 in the main house and six more in the lodge.

Portinscale, near Keswick. The Lingholm Estate. Self-catering. You won’t see Mr McGregor here but you’ll get some idea of why Beatrix Potter loved this part of Lakeland. The children’s author spent nine holidays at Lingholm between 1885 and 1907 and thanks to a huge investment in the estate over the last few years you can stay here as well. 12 properties, including The Boathouse.
