near Ambleside. Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa

A few steps from the shores of Windermere, with wonderful views across the water to the Langdale fells, this is one of the best located hotels in the Lake District.

Massive investment over the last few years has transformed the 131 bedroom destination where its Winander Club, the Blue Smoke on the Bay restaurant, the spa and health club and its watersports centre all add to the reasons for staying here.

The three floor Winander Club is the undoubted star of the hotel, with 29 rooms, a private breakfast area on the first floor, a bar on the second, and a roof terrace affording those fantastic views to the Langdale Pikes and the Coniston fells. The bar and restaurant both have enormous windows as well.

As in the rest of the hotel, the 29 Winander bedrooms are categorised by trees: Oak, Lime, Hazel and Willow. Two duplex suites overlook both the lake and the hills behind Low Wood Bay. A number of rooms in the main building face the water as well.

Another attraction is the excellent spa and health club which offers a range of treatments, thermal experiences, spa days, a gym, steam room, sauna and indoor pool. Pre-booking is essential for use of the gym and health club facilities. There’s also an infinity pool outside with more great views over Windermere.

Drop by Norman’s Juice Bar in the relaxed Atrium for coffee and light bites, and take a seat close to the fire pit or beside the large window overlooking the lake. Head downstairs to Blue Smoke on the Bay where a three metre long wood-fired grill is the centrepiece of the restaurant. A wood-fired afternoon tea is served here too.

The Langdale Lounge and Bar serves drinks and snacks while The W is a glamorous restaurant setting for dinner (and breakfast), with its Art Deco images, mirrored wall panelling and huge globe lights.
