Ruleholme, near Carlisle. The Fleece

What a triumph. Having spent the best part of the pandemic building this 23 bedroom hotel, The Fleece finally opened in late 2021, a cracking addition - evident as soon as you park up and walk in - to the hospitality landscape in this part of Cumbria. The AA awarded The Fleece four silver stars for hospitality in spring 2022.

Come through the oak front door into a spacious reception area and the large, oak-framed library lounge is straight ahead. It’s got a cosy, clubby feel to it, what with the lamps, the different style sofas, the small candles burning on each table and a wall lined with bookshelves (and heaps of books).

Three areas of the restaurant (which has an AA rosette for ‘culinary excellence’), a bar, another dining area and Hadrian’s Suite for weddings and family gatherings complete the picture downstairs while upstairs are those 23 bedrooms, divided into three room types: classic king, classic twin and superior king.

Lakeland stone walls, comfy chairs, oak beams, calming colours on the walls, custom artwork, Sedbergh Soap toiletries, fluffy bathrobes and a fully stocked mini-bar are what you can expect to find. ’An overnight stay here will leave you feeling refreshed, rejuvenated and replenished,’ says the hotel which is a few miles east of Carlisle and the M6 and not far from Hadrian’s Wall.
