More hotels in Grasmere, Hawkshead and Coniston

Elterwater. Brimstone Hotel. The Langdale Pikes are up the road and there’s perfect walking country all around but once you check into Brimstone, all that rock and rugged fellside seems a million miles away. The hotel has 16 large and luxurious rooms, every one with balconies, most with wood burning stoves. The hotel is located on the Langdale Estate. 

Elterwater. The Eltermere Inn. What started life as a farmhouse is now a smart, 13 bedroom hotel with two lounges, a dining room, a small bar and an outside terrace.

Grasmere. Forest Side. A 20 bedroom hotel outside Grasmere which stands in 46 acres (18.6ha) of gardens and grounds, Forest Side ‘continues to delight guests with its stylish, laid back atmosphere, enormous wooden gardens and inspired culinary creations,’ says the Good Hotel Guide 2022. The restaurant has a Michelin star. Stylish bedrooms were designed by James Mackie, once keyboard player with Madness.

Grasmere. The Grasmere Hotel. A ‘little gem’ quotes the Good Hotel Guide 2022 of this 11 bedroom hotel, loved for its ‘comfort, food and welcome’. It was Country House Hotel of the Year in the guide’s 2021 edition. This being Grasmere, there’s a literary theme to the 11 bedrooms here, with names like Beatrix, de Quincey, Coleridge, Shelley and Ruskin. The restaurant overlooks the garden, past which the River Rothay flows.

Grasmere. Lancrigg. Once the home of Arctic explorer Sir John Richardson, the walks around Lancrigg were amongst William Wordsworth’s favourites. The hotel has ten bedrooms and stands in 30 acres (12ha) of gardens and woodland.

Grasmere. Rothay Garden Hotel. Small Hotel of the Year at the Cumbria Tourism Awards in both 2013 and 2018, Rothay Garden sits in two acres (0.8 ha) of grounds on the outskirts of Grasmere, with 30 bedrooms, two lounges, the two AA rosette Garden Restaurant and the Riverside Spa.

Grasmere. Victorian House. Opened as Victorian House in 2020 in the same building as the former Oak Bank Hotel. There are a variety of bedrooms to chose from while the conservatory restaurant overlooks a riverside garden. A Shepherd’s Hut offers further accommodation.

Grasmere. Wordsworth Hotel. It’s got the perfect name for this area and given that Woodrow Wilson stayed here twice before becoming US President in 1913, an interesting history. 38 rooms and suites go from classic bedrooms to the Ruskin and de Quincey suites. The Signature Restaurant has an AA rosette and there’s a bistro too. Plus a swimming pool and spa. 

Near Grasmere. The Yan at Broadrayne. Opened in 2019, this seven bedroom hotel (with self-catering cottages) is based on a working Lakeland farm, close to Dunmail Raise on the A591 Grasmere to Keswick road. There’s a bistro/restaurant here as well which was Casual Dining Venue of the Year at the Cumbria Food Awards 2022. 

Great Langdale. The Old Dungeon Ghyll. ‘The Langdale valley setting is incredible, and staying here is to become part of legend,’ said The Observer Magazine in 2021. A firm favourite of many walkers and climbers, the ODG has 12 bedrooms. It was once owned by the famous historian GM Trevelyan (1876-1962). Good Pub Guide 2021.

Near Sawrey. Ees Wyke Country House. Beatrix Potter stayed here three times on family holidays and then later - in 1905 - bought nearby Hill Top. The nine bedroom Georgian country house overlooks Esthwaite Water, has two lounges and an AA rosette restaurant. Good Hotel Guide 2022.

Rydal. Glen Rothay Hotel. ‘Draw up a wish-list of things you would like to find in your ideal Lake District hostelry and chances are they are to be found at the Glen Rothay,’ say the owners of this 12 bedroom hotel, close to William Wordsworth’s old home of Rydal Mount.
