Crook near Windermere. The Wild Boar

There’s an immediately welcoming feel as you step into the flagstoned bar of this well known traditional inn where a fire burns in an old range to the left, and the bar straight ahead serves beer from its own Wild Boar Brewhouse.

The 34 bedrooms of this AA five star inn - divided into Classic, Feature and Luxury - include three suites with log burning stoves and seven rooms with their own patio. Room names have a porcine theme as in Old SpotLarge WhiteOld Berkshire and Wild Boar, the latter a suite with a copper bath in the bedroom.

Downstairs the Grill and Smokehouse Restaurant - also with open fires - serves dinner, Sunday lunch and an ‘alternative’ afternoon tea. Small plates and large plates are offered for dinner, with the latter including smoked barbecue pork belly, pan seared calves’ liver and battered haddock and chips.

Fillet steak and ribeye steak can be smoked or unsmoked while other dishes from the char-grill and smokehouse could be marinated monkfish and king prawn, the Wild Boar burger or Shawarma spiced lamb.

The ‘alternative’ afternoon tea - mini fish and chips, pork crackling and pigs in blankets - is rounded off with something more traditional: scones, cream and jam.

The Wild Boar sits in 72 acres (29ha) of private woodland (with tarn) through which there are a number of walking trails. Clay pigeon shooting, archery, axe throwing and a new addition of interactive falconry displays are available too, if booked in advance. The inn is only a few minutes drive from the east side of Windermere (lake).
