Kirkby Lonsdale. The Sun Inn

Whatever the weather is in Cumbria, the Sun Inn isn’t short of a sparkle. A main entry in the Good Hotel Guide 2022 and the Good Pub Guide 2021, Iain and Jenny Black’s five star destination combines the ‘charm and character of a 17th century country inn’ with stylish, contemporary accommodation.

Downstairs in the bar and restaurant, the beams, flagstones, oak floors, oak wall panelling, open fires and cheery staff make you immediately feel welcome. Upstairs and over two floors, the beams and exposed stone of the 11 bedrooms - deluxe, superior, standard - give guests a sense of history while the furnishings, bathrooms and luxurious little touches offer a great sense of comfort.

Furniture in the bedrooms was handmade by a Waring and Gillow’s cabinetmaker, beds have pillow-top mattresses, carpets are made with Swaledale wool and bathroom toiletries are from Sedbergh company Bath House which also has a shop in Kirkby Lonsdale.

A number of bedrooms are dog-friendly, dogs receiving a complimentary ‘pooch pack’ on arrival, including a towel, a bowl and a special treat. There’s also a dog trail map, including a short walk immediately from the front door.

The restaurant has two AA Rosettes, its food - ‘modern British’ - described as ‘amazing’ in the Good Hotel Guide 2022 (check website for menu and serving times).

A few steps from the Sun Inn is a view across the River Lune to Middleton Fell and Casterton that John Ruskin described in the 1870s as ‘one of the loveliest in England, therefore in the world’. Kirkby Lonsdale itself is within easy striking distance of the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District, so a perfect spot for getting the best of both worlds.
