Cockermouth. Castlegate House Gallery

20th century and contemporary British painting and ceramics is very much the focus of Castlegate House, Cumbria’s best known commercial art gallery. Since opening its doors in 1987, over 300 exhibitions have been held in the two main rooms of this listed Georgian building, close to Cockermouth Castle.

Those exhibitions have included paintings and drawings by Frank Auerbach, Winifred Nicholson, Sheila Fell, Leon Kossoff, Carel Weight, Norman Cornish, Mary Fedden and Percy Kelly, plus work by ‘exciting up and coming young talented artists’ such as Alice Campbell, Louis Appleby, William Reinsch and Alex Hain. You'll discover works by many artists you wouldn't usually expect to see outside of notable central London galleries.

Striking examples of contemporary sculpture and ceramics are usually on display here as well from the likes of Grayson Perry, Jim Malone, William Plumptre, Edward Hughes and David Hochhauser.
