Carlisle. Chapman Bags

This is a great Cumbrian success story, the business starting in a village near Carlisle in 1984 but now sending its leisure, travel, business and sporting bags, its totes and satchels - for men and women - all over the world.

Quality and craftsmanship have long been Chapman’s signature and the fact that the bags are made in Cumbria, with much work done by hand, is a strong selling point too. ‘As good a quality bag as you’ll find,’ said The Times magazine in late 2018 about the company’s Spey slimline backpack.

There are more than 100 different products in the Chapman’s range: shoulder bags, fishing bags, rucksacks, travel bags, laptop bags, satchels, holdalls, totes, saddle bags, handbags, backpacks and briefcases. Many are made of bonded canvas with leather straps, leather trims and solid brass buckles, but Harris tweed, leather and waxed cotton bags are produced as well.

Some of the names in the range - Troutbeck shoulder bag, Patterdale pouch crossbody, Derwent travel bag, Helvellyn rucksack, Grisedale satchel, Reiver leather holdall - reflect the company’s strong Lakeland and Cumbrian connection. There’s an Aldgate work bag and a Billingsgate travel bag but then Chapman’s also have a London showroom.
