Caldbeck. The Wool Clip

2021 saw the 20th anniversary of this wonderful co-operative whose aim is to add value to British wool and to celebrate the very best of this sustainable fibre.

In sharing their enthusiasm for all things wool, the members of the co-operative ‘grow it, sew it, spin, weave and dye it, knit, crochet and felt it, stuff, hook and tuft with it’. Then, from their shop in Caldbeck - and online - they sell it.

And what a range there is. You can buy yarns (in natural and hand-dyed colours), tools, clothing, accessories, homeware, patterns, books and wool kits, as well as getting ideas and inspiration. You’ll find a range of scarves, shawls, jackets, rugs, Herdwick throws, hats, jumpers, bags, beanies, cushions and much more.

Inside the shop there’s also a display of artefacts from the day when Priest’s Mill was a water-powered mill, first for corn and then later as a sawmill.

When it was founded The Wool Clip’s aim was not only to add that value mentioned to British wool but to encourage traditional skills like weaving and knitting. There are about a dozen members, drawn from farmers, dyers, felt makers, knitters, spinners, crocheters and weavers.

The Wool Clip has certainly been a great success story, as has the very popular, annual Woolfest in Cockermouth, organised by members of the co-operative.
