Cartmel. Cartmel Village Shop

There’s no blue plaque on the wall outside to advertise the fact but this is the birthplace of the famous Cartmel Sticky Toffee Pudding which celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2020.

Because of demand the pudding’s now made down the road in Flookburgh along with others in its range - sticky banana, sticky ginger, sticky chocolate and sticky toffee apple. But you can still buy the puddings here because this is essentially a food and drink emporium with a lot of very tasty things on offer.

There’s a small cheese counter at the lower end of the shop while elsewhere you’ll find sausages and smoked salmon from Cartmel Valley Game, bacon and air dried ham from RB Woodall of Waberthwaite, pickles and jams from Hawkshead Relish, fudge from The Toffee Shop in Penrith and Quiggin’s of Kendal, Romney’s Kendal Mint Cake, coffee and tea from Farrer’s of Kendal, Kin Toffee Vodka, gin from the Lakes Distillery and Pennington’s mint cake liqueur.

Fruit and vegetables are stocked and you can buy takeaway homemade soups, sandwiches, quiches, salads, pork pies, scones, traybakes and hot drinks. Hampers are made to order all year round although mainly at Christmas.

Many years ago the building was used by the farm next door to cure its bacon, which explains the numerous meat hooks in the ceiling. Later the premises became a post office (it’s no longer here) and the original counter remains in this rather atmospheric shop.
