Hawkshead. Hawkshead Relish

What was once a café is now the main outlet and shop front for one of Cumbria’s best known producers, makers of more than 120 different relishes, pickles and preserves. Between them they have won over 70 Great Taste Awards from the Guild of Fine Food.

The shop in Hawkshead - which food and drink broadcaster Nigel Barden said ‘should be a culinary destination for all’ - stocks the full range of Hawkshead Relish jams, chutneys, pickles, mustards, salsas, sauces, savoury jellies, curds, flavoured oils and marmalades. A great place for presents or for your own kitchen.

Look out for the ‘tasting table’ and for the successes in the Great Taste Awards 2021: Hot Beetroot Ketchup (two stars), Salted Caramel Sauce, Raspberry and Vanilla Jam, BBQ Sauce and Dijon Mustard (all one star).

There’s also Black Garlic Pickle which won three stars in 2018, the same year as the Back Garlic Ketchup was named Best Condiment/Marinade at the World Food Innovation Awards.

Hawkshead Relish had its origins in the chutneys and pickles Mark and Maria Whitehead used to serve to customers when this shop was a café. Having been hit by the outbreak of foot and mouth in 2001, the Whiteheads decided to go into jam, chutney and sauce-making full time and you can safely say they’ve never looked back.
