Preserves, cordials, liqueurs. Lakeland Artisan

Five brands under its umbrella. More than 70 Great Taste Awards to its name for jams, marmalades, pickles, mustards, drinks and sauces. And shops in Windermere, Keswick, Carlisle, Bowness and further afield. Lakeland Artisan has certainly come a long way since its launch - as Friendly Food and Drink - in 2006.

The business is run by Geoff and Mary Monkman who picked up ten of those Great Taste Awards in 2021, the highest number of any Cumbrian producer. Two stars went to its damson extra jam, its sweet garlic pickle, spiced fruit rum liqueur and rhubarb and ginger gin liqueur. ‘All our products are naturally delicious using quality ingredients with no artificial flavours, colours or preservatives,’ says Geoff.

Among the one star winners was Yan Gin, launched in August 2021, and the first spirit under the Herdwick Distillery brand. That now sits alongside Cumbrian Delights and its range of preserves, chutneys and Prosecco syrups, Lakeland Liqueurs with more than a dozen different gin, rum and vodka liqueurs and Mawson’s Traditional Drinks

The latter was founded in 1933 but Geoff bought the business in 2015 and it now produces ginger cordial, dandelion and burdock, sarsaparilla and cream soda amongst other drinks.

It goes without saying that many of his products find their way into Lakeland Hampers, as does other food and drink produced by local businesses. As you’ll notice in the different Lakeland Artisan shops, produce from Cumbria is much in evidence on the shelves. A sign of the couple’s great support for ‘buying local’.
