Gifts and much more. Parma Violet, Kirkby Lonsdale

Where else in Cumbria but at Parma Violet can you find Tintin T-shirts, rattan baby rattles and Emma Bridgewater pottery rubbing shoulders - on the shelves - with cashmere scarves, vegan body oils and Lake District Monopoly sets?

Julie Evans’ shop in Kirkby Lonsdale must have one of the most eclectic and occasionally unusual range of gifts, cards, toys, clothing, homeware, crafts and pet products of any place in the county. It’s a big and regularly changing selection and one which certainly puts a smile on your face.

On the ground floor there’s a choice of tote bags, jigsaw puzzles, little house brooches, jam jar candles, faux grass table runners, books, humorous dog toys, dog leads and dog collars, scarves, tea towels, wrist warmers, animal puppets, candle tins, cards, blankets and Herdwick wool insoles.

Downstairs in the two rooms, with their beams and flagstones, it’s all about children, with cuddly toys, wooden animals, puzzles, games, marbles, train sets, rubber ducks, baby gift sets, bags, clothing, coloured pencil sets and such like. A children’s story is quietly related through a loudspeaker.

Parma Violet is big on Tintin too, the character created by Belgian cartoonist Georges Prosper Remi (pen name Hergé). There are Tintin posters, Tintin books, Tintin watches, Tintin models, ceramic rocket mugs and Tintin playing cards. And not forgotten is his white Wire Fox Terrier, Snowy, here in the shop as a ‘very lovely soft plush toy’.
